What to Do in the Event of a Roofing Emergency

Roof problems are every homeowner’s nightmare. They can cause damage to many parts of your home, eat away at your savings, and are generally a major headache to address. You are not completely powerless when something goes wrong with your roof, however. An emergency roof repair can stem the tide until a full repair or replacement can take place. In this post, roofing contractor V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding explains what to do:

What to Do in the Event of a Roofing Emergency

Protective Cover

Once a roofing system is in any way compromised, it will allow water infiltration. Ask your roofer to install a protective cover to prevent further damage. Roofers will typically use an emergency tarp to cover the hole in the roof or damaged area until the weather system passes. They can then assess the damage and propose a more permanent roof repair.

Stopgap Measures

Wait for the weather to clear so your roofing company can do what’s necessary. In the meantime, you can do the following. Sweep away puddles that have formed on the roof. Pooling water not only leaves unpleasant-looking stains on the ceiling, but it can also eventually damage the entire roof structure.

Locate the Leak

Next, try to find where the leak is coming from. This task can be challenging, as the water source might be far away from the drip or stain. If you can’t find the source, don’t worry; your contractor will identify it once they’re able to perform a thorough inspection.

Temporary Fixes

You may use duct tape, tarps, patches, sealants and rubber sheets. Clean the section all around the leak before applying the patch materials. Any water, dirt or other debris by the leak could cause the patch to come undone.
