4 Hardscaping Ideas for a Commercial Green Roof

Green roofs are a unique and eco-friendly way to add some detail and function to a commercial roofing system. While most green roofs fall under the category of a roof garden, not all fit this mold. In the commercial setting, the role of the green roof is to solve or alleviate some problems the property experiences such as water and heat-related issues.

4 Hardscaping Ideas for a Commercial Green Roof

In this post, V. Nanfito Roofing and Siding, Inc. shares four hardscaping ideas for a commercial green roof.

1. Rain-Soaker Roof

While flat roofs are practical and easy to build, they are susceptible to leaks due their lack of pitch. Rainwater tends to pool on the surface of the flat roof, which can cause continuous water damage and eventually become a leak.

A green roof can solve this by essentially becoming a “rain soaker.” The plants lining the entirety of the roof serve as a water sponge, soaking up the rainwater that would otherwise pool on the surface of the roof membrane. With this green roof, you effectively reduce the need for water-related maintenance. All you need to do to keep your roof looking good is invest in preventive roof repair and maintenance.

2. Heat Shield

A green roof doesn’t make the building any hotter; in fact, it actually does the reverse. Plants and foliage on the roof absorb 50% of the sunlight that hits it, helping create a cooler climate in your property. Not only does this improve the insulation and ventilation of your property, it also reduces the need to artificially cool your home during the summer months.

3. Decorative Garden

Alternatively, you can turn the green roof into a purely decorative structure filled with local and foreign plants. This method effectively turns your roof into a greenscape. Not only does this improve the look of your property, it also enhances the look of your surroundings.

4. Fire-Resistant Roof

A green roof can actually improve the fire resistance of your property. While plants are susceptible to fire, they also naturally contain a lot of moisture, which can help prevents this, especially if the roof garden is bolstered with mulch.
