How to Choose Exterior Window Trim

Exterior window trim is one of those exterior elements that never seems to get prioritized, which actually makes it more of a challenge to choose the right style, color, and finish. In this blog, window replacement contractor V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, Inc. shares tips on how to choose exterior window trim.

How to Choose Exterior Window Trim

Types of Window Trim

Window trim, also known as casing, covers the transition between wall and window frame. There are several types of window trim:

  1. Complete — This applies to window trim that surround all four sides of a window. It can be made of one or several layers of stacked moldings, which usually match the exterior trim.
  2. Simple Single-Layer — This type of window trim is more utilitarian than decorative, and typically lays flat against the siding. This no-fuss window trim fulfills its function of creating a finished look for newly-installed replacement windows, as well as preventing heat from passing through the gaps.
  3. High-Profile — High profile window trim offer the most options. It includes trim with ornate profiles, along with components such as pediments. It works best in tra
  4. Modern — Modern window trim is streamlined in aesthetics but not entirely utilitarian like simple window trim. It makes use of natural textures such as wood grain.
  5. Traditional — Traditional window trim is similar to high-profile trim in terms of aesthetics. It can be made of a single layer of wood or composite, like crown molding.

Color

Matching the other exterior trim is the “safe” option, and actually works in most exterior color palettes. However, you have to consider the color of the window frames and sashes. Generally, they have to be darker than the trim so the view seems to recede, drawing the viewer in. A darker trim would make it look like the windows are popping out.

If you are considering using multiple shades of the same trim color—which works best with multi-story homes—apply the darkest shade on the first level windows, then go lighter as you go up. It makes the exterior look balanced, visually.
